Rome Pizza Guide

I mean when you think of Italian food it’s hard to look much further than the pizza capital of the world. I tried some of Rome’s top pizzerias so you know where to go and try for yourself.

I was accompanied by the team at Elliots Craft Pizza & Grill (@elliotscraftpizza on Instagram). They're based over in Ripponden & Bamford, highly recommend if you've not already tried them out.

Margherita Pizza at Sorbillo

Sorbillo

First, up for the pizza trip is Sorbillo’s, run by Gino Sorbillos who’s regarded as one of the best pizza mixers in Rome. I tried the classic Margherita and also went for a mortadella one, because who doesn’t love a bit of mortadella? The dough is very Neapolitan style, quite wet which I’m a fan of but I know not everyone is a fan of so just a heads up.

Personally, I think if you’re wanting a meal out and to be sat somewhere for pizza this is a great spot to go to. The restaurant is beautiful and it’s nice to just sit down and enjoy a meal. Whereas a few of these other spots are grab-and-go or more traditional places in terms of the environment.

Testaccio Market

Box 22 Testaccio Market Counter

Now wouldn’t be a food trip without venturing to a food market and Testaccio Market is full of traditional and contemporary food stalls with so much to try out. We tried a few stalls however settled on Box 22 Casa Manco for the pizza. We got a variety of sesame, zucchini, guanciale, truffle, and lemon. So many options so I recommend getting a spread. It would be rude to just get one or two.

Bonci

Now if you google where to go for pizza in Rome, this place is everywhereeeeee! And rightly so might I add. It’s in a rubbish area might I add so just be warned from that front. However, once you make the trek and try the food, oh my days. You’ll be in carb heaven. Also recommend getting the arancini, the perfect pizza side dish.

Pizza at Bonci

Emma

Now Emma is classic Tonda Romana style pizza which is a very thin pizza and the dough is from Rosolio (see below). It's voted one of the best pizzerias in Rome, very different to what I had on the trip as it’s a bit crispier but keeping that thin light base. We tried the prosciutto pizza and another classic Margherita, honestly is it just me that thinks a classic Margherita can’t be beaten? Especially if done right its sosososo good. I prefer a wetter pizza but if you’re wanting something a bit crispier then this is your place to head to.

Rosolio Interior

Rosolio

One of the best bakeries in Rome where we tried a pizza Bianca, thinly sliced, crispy dough with thinly sliced potatoes and olive oil. If you’re not wanting something overly heavy then this is the perfect thing to eat. Nice and light and flavoursome, we had it as breakfast in the morning and it was just the perfect thing to get the day going.

EATALY

The largest market in Rome with floors dedicated to wine, beer, pasta, fresh meats, and cheese honestly I could go on. Puts supermarkets to shame with the quantity and quality of products inside. We headed to

Making dough at EATALY

the pizzeria (obviously) for the last meal of the trip *cries*. It’s another one if you want to sit inside and watch the pizzas getting made behind the counter. This was probably the busiest place out of all the recommendations I went to as the others were more street food or we had bookings. Completely worth it, and even though I was ready to burst from all the pizza eaten it still hit the spot beautifully.

Summary

There we go, pizza guide to Rome. Some of the best pizzas I’ve ever eaten with a broad range of doughs, toppings and cooking methods. Bit of variety for you so you can give them a try!
